Dragon Boat Challenge – our 18-strong team row to
victory
On 19 June 2007, we entered an 18-strong team in Richard House's
Dragon Boat Challenge. The team set off for the Docklands Sailing
and Watersports Centre with only one dry run underneath their
belts. The sun was shining and spirits were high. Having been
taught the rudiments of dragon boat racing in the five minute
pre-race pep talk, the team won the first race, but by the second
race, arms were tired and voices hoarse. The team battled back from
defeat and after two more races secured a place in the final.
We are not sure if it was the rain which spurred on the team or
whether they had simply found their rhythm, but the team paddled in
unison and fought off stiff competition from the "Hawaii Five-O's"
to pip them to the post and win the race. £2,500 was raised.
