Mulberry School – Numbers Partners

Number Partners is a national volunteering scheme that brings together business volunteers and schools, working collaboratively to improve standards in maths. The scheme has been running for over five years in Tower Hamlets, and for the last two years we have worked with the Mulberry School for Girls.  The volunteers visit for 45 minutes a week, during the pupils’ lunchtime. Two children work with a volunteer, playing a set of numeracy games specially developed by BEAM Education for the Number Partners scheme.  The focus for Number Partners is children aged from 12 to 14.

The overall objective is to raise pupils’ attainment in numeracy.  The specific aims are to support schools in raising achievement in numeracy, use number-related activities as a means to develop children’s number skills, enhance children’s mental skills in numeracy, develop children’s confidence and motivation to learn and to give them a positive insight into the business world

The volunteers all find the scheme very interesting and extremely worthwhile. It is a great deal of fun and you can really see the improvement in the pupils; not only in their numeracy skills but also in their confidence.
