FFW advises Ordnance Survey on Transport Direct service

12 August 2004

City law firm Field Fisher Waterhouse has advised Ordnance Survey in connection with its partnering agreement with the Department for Transport (DfT), which could significantly improve UK journey planning. The partnership will allow the DfT to draw on Ordnance Survey’s most sophisticated data products for its forthcoming web-based Transport Direct service (www.transportdirect.info).

The Transport Direct Internet portal will provide users with detailed travel information, making journeys by car and public transport easier and more efficient. Users will benefit from the most advanced digital mapping system available, access to up-to-the-minute travel information and online transport ticket booking facilities.

The FFW team was led by partner Nigel Wildish of the firm’s Information, Communications and Technology Group. He was assisted by Caroline Barton and Liz McSweeney. Nigel says:

“The technology behind this web-service is staggeringly sophisticated. The OS MasterMap – Integrated Transport Network layer together with road routing information, provides the detailed overview of the complete road network for GB and information that may affect a driver’s choice of route including height and vehicle type restrictions, traffic calming, turn restrictions and one-way roads. In addition OS ADDRESS-POINT is a dataset that uniquely defines and locates 27 million residential, business and public postal addresses in Great Britain.

Ordnance Survey were able to supply the DfT with the most advanced digital mapping technology for this project and we feel very proud to have worked on the agreement.”

Transport Direct were advised in-house.
