Field Fisher Waterhouse boosts Brussels office with latest lateral appointments
01 October 2007
The Brussels office
of Field Fisher Waterhouse LLP announces today the appointment of a
leading EU regulatory and litigation team, who join the firm’s
highly regarded Competition
& EU Regulatory Group from the Brussels office of US law
firm McKenna, Long & Aldridge.
The team comprises three partners (Koen Van Maldegem,
Claudio Mereu
and Ruxandra
Cana), one of Counsel, three additional fee-earners and a
consultant, as well as one of Counsel joining from Freshfields.
These latest appointments to the rapidly expanding Brussels office closely follow
those of employment partner,
Olivier
Rijckaert, corporate partner,
Marie Evrard
and pensions partner
Corinne Merla, who have all joined the firm over the last two
months with their respective teams.
The EU regulatory and litigation team was formed by Claudio Mereu and
Koen Van
Maldegem at McKenna, Long & Aldridge’s Brussels office,
where Mereu became its managing partner. The team has a
leading reputation advising on EU regulatory and competition law
and have a particular specialism in general chemicals (REACH),
pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, biosciences, cosmetics, the WEEE
and RoHS Directives and other environmental regulation. For
many years the team has also litigated on landmark regulatory cases
at both EU and Member State level, including the recent appeal in
the UK to seek the annulment of REACH regulations regarding
polymers.
The new team provides an excellent strategic fit with Field
Fisher Waterhouse’s already well recognised Competition
& EU Regulatory Group. The Group combines public and
regulatory, competition & EU, public procurement and regulated
industries expertise, and litigation, with clients such as
Accenture, the Environment Agency, the Nuclear Decommissioning
Agency, Orange and RAJAR.
Charles
Whiddington, Head of Field Fisher Waterhouse LLP’s Competition
& EU Regulatory Group said: “The new team is another
excellent addition to our growing European partnership. Their
expertise and client base has good synergies with Field Fisher
Waterhouse’s Competition
and EU Regulatory Group and means we can now offer our clients
advice from lawyers at the centre of EU regulation.”
Eric Cusas,
managing partner of Field Fisher Waterhouse in Brussels, said: “We are
pleased to welcome Claudio Mereu and the
team to Field Fisher Waterhouse. They have an excellent
reputation in EU legislative and litigation matters and a strong
client base. Their appointments are part of the continued growth of
our Brussels office,
following the recent appointments of Marie Evrard, Corinne
Merla and Olivier
Rijckaert.”
Claudio
Mereu and Koen
Van Maldegem commented: “We are very excited about this
move. Field Fisher Waterhouse provides a perfect fit and its
pan-European coverage will greatly benefit our clients as we become
involved with higher regulatory challenges in the EU.”
