Field Fisher Waterhouse Wins Place on Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority Legal Panel

20 March 2008

Field Fisher Waterhouse LLP has won a competitive tender to advise the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority (HFEA) on legal matters.  The firm has been appointed to the HFEA’s panel of legal service providers for a period of three years.

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority is the UK's independent regulator overseeing safe and appropriate practice in fertility treatment and embryo research. The Authority licences and monitors centres carrying out IVF, artificial insemination and human embryo research.

This is the first time that the HFEA has held a competitive tender process and set up a formal legal panel.  The Authority will be looking to members of the panel to provide the full range of legal advice including general public law, corporate governance, judicial review, employment, contracts and procurement, medical law and training.

Sarah Ellson, partner in the Public and Regulatory Law Group at Field Fisher Waterhouse will lead a team from across the firm’s practice areas, including employment, privacy and information and corporate and commercial.  Field Fisher Waterhouse has worked with the HFEA for four years, advising on a wide range of regulatory issues including a review of the work of the Licence Committee which regulates research and treatment.

Field Fisher Waterhouse’s Public and Regulatory Law Group has an excellent reputation, particularly in relation to life sciences and healthcare.  The firm’s clients include the General Medical Council, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain and the Healthcare Commission.

Sarah Ellson said: “We are delighted to have been selected for the HFEA’s legal panel at a time when there are so many new developments in the field of fertility treatment and embryo research. This is a high profile area of the law with proposed legislation causing much debate in the Commons.”

Herbert Smith, Morgan Cole and Beachcrofts were also appointed to the panel.
