Leading Cambridge life sciences lawyer joins Field Fisher Waterhouse
23 July 2009
Law firm Field Fisher Waterhouse LLP announces today the
appointment of life sciences lawyer Julian Hitchcock. Julian, a
leading expert in the laws and regulation relating to stem cells
and regenerative technologies, joins the firm’s Competition and EU Regulatory Group and
cross-practice Life Sciences Team, from
Cambridge firm, Mills & Reeve.
Julian’s work on the law and regulation of cells and tissues
includes advising on patent exploitation and enforcement, cell and
tissue law. He also advises on the regulation of medicines
and devices, product liability, clinical trials and collaboration
agreements.
Julian has a strong client base in Cambridge and is heavily
involved in the region’s life sciences community. He was appointed
a Director of the East of England Stem Cell Network in 2007 and is
a member of the UK National Stem Cell Network’s Commercialisation
Group. He also sits on the development committee of the
biomedical science charity, the PHG Foundation.
Field Fisher Waterhouse’s Life Sciences Team is based in
London,
Paris,
Brussels
and Hamburg. Julian
will work closely with the other members of this team, including
the partner leading the London team, Alison
Dennis, Olivier
Lantrès, in Paris and three partners in Brussels. The team in
Brussels is led by Claudio
Mereu and has a leading reputation advising on
EU regulatory law, with a particular specialism in general
chemicals (REACH), pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and
biosciences.
Julian Hitchcock said: "These are testing times for life science
industries, yet their capacity to improve healthcare and to create
wealth and employment is ballooning. Whilst other law firms
have sought to cut back, Field Fisher Waterhouse has committed
itself to setting the bar for European life science practices and
to supporting new technologies. I was particularly impressed
by the breadth and depth of Field Fisher Waterhouse’s offering for
life sciences clients, including its corporate, patent, data
protection and international firepower, as well as the way in which
the firm goes the extra mile to identify with its clients. It is
vital that companies in the regenerative medicine sector receive
the highest available standard of specialist legal advice to enable
them to compete effectively in the emerging markets, and I am very
pleased to be a part of this outstanding team. I am also thrilled
to be able to increase my involvement with the Cambridge life
science cluster, where I work for two days a week."
Alison Dennis, Head of Life Sciences at Field Fisher Waterhouse
in London, said: “Julian is well known as a leading legal adviser
in the growing and increasingly important area of stem cell
technology and regenerative medicine. His expertise will be a
significant asset both to our Competition and EU Regulatory Group
and the firm’s cross-practice Life Sciences capability.”
