Field Fisher Waterhouse advises major Kazakh oil and gas producer on acquisition from BG Group
20 September 2010
Field Fisher Waterhouse LLP has advised JSC KazMunaiGas
Exploration Production (KMG EP) on its second acquisition in as
many months. The Kazakhstan-based oil and gas producer has acquired
a 35% stake in certain oil and gas fields in the North Sea from BG
Group for an undisclosed sum.
This is KMG EP’s first investment in an oil and gas exploration
project outside Kazakhstan. BG Group will remain as operator,
working in conjunction with KMG EP to develop the fields. This
follows last month’s acquisition of a 50% interest in Mangistau
Investments BV. The deal, which Field Fisher Waterhouse also
advised on, was worth US$1.66 billion and will allow KMG EP to
increase oil production and reserves in Kazakhstan.
Corporate partner and head of energy and natural resources
Richard Temple, with associate Nodir Sidikov, advised on the latest
deal supported by seven other lawyers. The team worked closely with
BG Group’s in-house legal team and lead counsel Helen Pearson.
Alex Woodfield, head of the CIS group at Field Fisher
Waterhouse, said: “We are delighted to have advised on this deal
for KMG EP. Our CIS group knows the sector and the region well and
as such we were very pleased to assist KMG EP in negotiating and
closing this deal to expand its operations outside of
Kazakhstan.”
This is the latest transaction for Field Fisher Waterhouse’s
successful CIS group. The 12-lawyer strong team, including eight
Russian speakers, advises major Russian and CIS businesses and
entrepreneurs across a range of sectors.
