FFW advises Mahogany Hairdressing on Australian hairdressing franchise
04 August 2004
City law firm Field Fisher Waterhouse have advised Mahogany
Hair, the award-winning and long-established UK hairdressers, on
their entry into the Australian market. The world renowned
hair business has granted one of its former stylists, Hamish
Glianos, the right to operate a chain of Mahogany salons in
Australia, the first of which will be in Sydney.
Mahogany, a salon group based in London’s Hanover Square and
Oxford employs 100 staff and services 1,500 clients a week.
Over 25 years, the salons have built up a leading reputation,
having received plaudits from Vogue, Time Out, Marie Claire and
Cosmopolitan, and many industry awards. They are
internationally renowned for direction and motivational shows,
seminars and workshops.
Richard Thompson, owner and co-founder of Mahogany UK and
currently President of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing
says:
“This is a great deal for Mahogany. Although the Mahogany
brand is known worldwide, this is our first foray abroad.
Australia is a prime target for us and we have great confidence in
Hamish who is not only an exceptionally talented stylist and
experienced business person, but also understands what the Mahogany
brand stands for due to his having worked in our business for
several years before his move down under. The whole process
has been a completely new experience for us. We have relied
heavily upon Mark and his team at FFW for both commercial and legal
advice. Their encyclopaedic knowledge of international
franchising and their appreciation and sensitivity to both our
commercial and artistic needs have been invaluable and will give us
a real competitive advantage. They were always there for us
when we needed them. Without their guidance and expertise, I
suspect this deal may never have happened.”
Mark Abell, partner and Head of Franchising, advised Mahogany
Hair. He was assisted by solicitor, Graeme Payne. Mark
said:
“Richard and his team exude passion about their business and
have a clear vision of where they want the Mahogany brand to
be. We were able to ensure that they struck a commercial deal
and adopted the business structure that best suited their needs and
accommodated their ambition. It was great fun working with
Richard and his team and we are happy that we were able to deliver
some real added value that gives them an advantage in what is a
very competitive sector of business.”
