FFW boosts IP practice with new partner appointment
29 June 2006
Field Fisher Waterhouse LLP (FFW) announces today the
appointment of Ian Craig, who joins the firm’s intellectual
property practice from US firm Dorsey & Whitney, where he was
head of IP in London.
This latest lateral partnership appointment is FFW’s fifth in
2006, following the arrival of Simon Briskman from Olswang, Neil
Foster and David Naylor from Morrison and Foerster and Jeremy Miles
from Lion Television.
Ian Craig will in particular enhance FFW’s patents
capability. He undertakes substantial patent litigation and
has represented a number of US companies both as claimants and
defendants in patent litigation in the UK.
Ian also deals with infringement of all forms of registered IP
protection including coordinating actions throughout Europe in
relation to trade mark and design right infringements. In
relation to registered intellectual property rights he has advised
major companies on copyright infringements in films and computer
software. His major clients include Pearson (Edexcel and NCS
Pearson Limited); DaimlerChrysler; Corbis (Bill Gates’ private
company) and Crocs Inc (a US shoe company).
FFW’s team of patent lawyers offers the full range of patent
services, from filing and exploitation to resolving disputes.
The practice works with patent attorneys Mathys & Squire to
provide an integrated patents service through a joint venture,
Isosceles.
The patents team has had some notable successes so far in
2006. The firm acted for leading life science technology
company, PerkinElmer, in the defence of a patent infringement
action brought by competitors, GE Healthcare. The win allowed
PerkinElmer to continue selling its ViewLux imager product, used by
pharmaceutical companies in drug discovery to measure particular
bio-chemical reactions. It also means the methodology is now
open to other companies who wish to utilise it.
Nick Rose, FFW’s head of IP and Technology Dispute Resolution,
said: “We are delighted that Ian Craig has decided to join
FFW. Ian’s appointment is a major boost for our IP litigation
practice and his links with US clients, specifically corporates,
will quickly add tangible value to our business.”
Moira Gilmour, FFW’s managing partner, added: “This latest
lateral partner appointment demonstrates that our IP and Technology
Dispute Resolution group is going from strength to strength.
The practice is increasingly successful in winning high-profile new
clients and Ian Craig’s arrival will ensure that this continues to
be the case.”
