FFW advises on launch of The Sportsman
Field Fisher Waterhouse (FFW) has advised on the launch of The
Sportsman, the UK’s first new national daily newspaper in nearly 20
years, which hit the stands on budget day, Wednesday 22 March.
The company behind The Sportsman is Sports Betting Media Ltd,
founded last year by Max Aitken, former Daily Telegraph managing
director Jeremy Deedes and Charlie Methven.
The paper is aimed at sports fans and those with an interest in
betting. It contains news, views and tips on a wide range of
sports, including but by no means limited to racing. The
Sportsman will also have a fully integrated web presence which will
be up and running by May this year.
FFW advised Sports Betting Media on three funding rounds, the
key commercial agreements for the venture and the paper’s
branding. The whole project from conception to launch was
completed in only a few months.
The firm advises a number of publishers including A & C
Black, Bloomsbury Publishing plc, Arts Publishing International,
the William Reed Group and BBC Worldwide Limited. This deal
further strengthens FFW’s reputation in the sector.
FFW corporate partner Andrew Blankfield led on the funding,
assisted by Laurence Lumb and Daniel Burns. IP partner, David
Bond advised on the commercial agreements and trade mark partner,
Rachel Tan on branding.
Andrew Blankfield said, “We are delighted to be involved with
such exciting venture. The UK has not seen the launch of a
new national daily paper for many years and with a nation full of
sports fans, I’m sure the paper will be a great success.”
Investors in Sports Betting Media were advised by Chris Putt of
Wedlake Bell.
