FFW advises leading hotel group on Romanian franchise deal
10 April 2007
Field Fisher Waterhouse LLP (FFW) has advised leading
hospitality group, the Wyndham Hotel Group, on entering into a
franchise agreement with Trend Hospitality in Romania. The
agreement will see Wyndham expand its presence in Romania and enter
the two and three-star hotel segment of the market.
Wyndham currently has a presence in Romania through the Ramada and
Howard Johnson brands. The new deal will see the launch of the new
Super 8 motel chain, as well as affiliations with a number of
three-star hotels, under the Days Inn or Days brand, also owned by
Wyndham.
In addition to this, building on its existing presence, the Ramada
brand will have five affiliated hotels in Romania by the end of
this year.
This is the third major deal FFW has advised Wyndham on in recent
months. In January, the firm advised Wyndham on a franchise
agreement with Bangalore based Royal Orchid Hotels Ltd to develop
ten Ramada hotels across India. In November 2006, the firm advised
the hotel group on a joint venture franchise agreement with the
Corinthia Group of companies to jointly manage hotels throughout
Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Mark Abell, head
of FFW’s Franchising
Practice led the deal, assisted by solicitor, Graeme Payne.
This latest international franchising deal once again reflects the
strength of FFW’s franchising group and its international
capability. FFW has advised a large portfolio of clients on
their global roll outs, including the likes of Hamleys, H&M
Hennes Mauritz, Monsoon, YO! Sushi, Reiss and M&S.
Mark Abell
said: “With its recent accession to the EU, Romania is
becoming a destination for a good number of franchisors,
particularly in the hotel and leisure sector. Over the last four
months, we have done three deals there and have others in the
pipeline. The rather vacuous nature of the Romanian franchise law
does little to help new entry franchisors but it does not seem to
be putting them off this new market.”
