Dr. Thomas Adam, a co-founder of Field Fisher
Waterhouse’s Munich
office, is a
Partner in the Intellectual Property
practice and a certified IP specialist (“Fachanwalt für
gewerblichen Rechtsschutz”), focuses mainly on patents, with an
emphasis on electrical engineering, computer technology and on the
telecommunications sector.
His work comprises the IP/antitrust interface
as well as trade secret protection. He is also a specialist in
contentious trade mark law and represents clients before all major
IP courts in Germany (as Dusseldorf, Mannheim and Munich)
regularly. Most recently, he co-represented a patentee before the
German Constitutional Court.
Thomas was a member of staff at the Max Planck
Institute for Intellectual Property Law, where he wrote his
doctoral thesis on the scope of protection of patents. He has
practiced in the field of IP since 2002, counselling SMEs and
multinational corporations in national, international and
multi-jurisdictional patent litigation in all technical fields,
including opposition and nullity proceedings before the German
Patent Court, the German Federal Supreme Court and the European
Patent Office. He also specialised in trade mark and design
infringement proceedings and is versed in matters related to unfair
trade practices. Thomas has authored numerous
freedom-to-practice opinions as well as licensing, R&D and
know-how agreements.
Among others, he is a frequent presenter in
the framework of symposia for national IP judges organized by the
European Patent Academy of the European Patent Organisation and has
been invited, among others, to present in Brazil, Japan, France,
UK, US and Taiwan.
Thomas has published a number of patent
litigation focussed articles and is editor for the German part of
an online commentary on the patent law (Kluwer Patent Smart
Charts). He has been named
by JUVE as “often recommended”. He is a member of the expert
committee on Intellectual Property of the Munich Bar.

English and Spanish.
