Mick Gorrill was the Head of Enforcement at the Information
Commissioners Office. He was responsible for all regulatory
activity in respect of breaches of the Data Protection Act 1998 and
the Freedom of Information Act 2000. He was also responsible for
the investigation of the criminal offences contained in both
Acts.
In 2005, Mick with one other became responsible for data
protection enforcement activity. He was involved in the HMRC and
MOD security breaches in 2007 which resulted in the ICO issuing
enforcement notices to both organisations. He was responsible for
the investigation of other a thousand other security breaches since
2007 and the development of the enforcement team to over 25 staff
including two lawyers. Recently the ICO has issued four civil
monetary penalty notices for serious breaches of the data
protection act.
He was also key player in the publication by the Information
Commissioner of two reports to Parliament highlighting the unlawful
trade in personal information; "What Price Privacy" and "What Price
Privacy Now".
Mick gave evidence before the House of Commons Culture, Media and
Sport Committee on self regulation of the Press following the
publication of What Price Privacy and What Price Privacy Now.
Mick has been asked to speak on enforcement or investigation
matters on many occasions mainly in the UK but on occasions at
conference overseas.
He has a reasonable understanding of Spanish.
