and specialises in high-value corporate and commercial disputes. Rhys is experienced in all forms of dispute
resolution, including High Court litigation, arbitration and
alternative dispute resolution such as mediation. Recent
examples of his corporate and commercial work includes:
- Acting for an oil and gas
exploration company in relation to a dispute concerning a joint
venture in the North Sea.
- Acting on behalf of a leading
developer of security software and hardware in relation to various
litigation arising out of the sale of the company's
shares for approximately
$800m.
- Acting on behalf of a leading
travel company in its defence of corporate and individual
manslaughter proceedings in the UK and overseas.
- Acting on behalf of Transport
for London in relation to various disputes with the operator of
Tramtrack Croydon.
- Acting on behalf of a high net
worth individual in relation to an LCIA Arbitration
concerning various breach of warranty
claims.
- Acting on behalf of a leading
industrial insulation provider in relation to a various claims and
prosecutions arising out of an employee's breach of
confidence.
Rhys
also acts for clients in the field of defamation and is recognised
as a leading expert in online defamation, particularly having acted
in two cases which have helped to shape the law in this fast moving
area. Recent cases include:
- Acting on behalf of Amazon in
its successful defence of libel proceedings concerning a defamatory
book review.
- Acting on behalf of ADVFN plc
in its successful defence of libel proceedings regarding comments
made on its bulletin boards.
- Acting on behalf of a US
website in successfully defending libel proceedings in Canada and
the US. This included obtaining one of the first ever declarations
of unenforceability under the SPEECH Act.
- Acting on behalf of a
weight-loss company in pursuing claims for defamation and malicious
falsehood against a competitor.
- Acting on behalf of various
professional regulatory bodies in defending libel claims brought by
its members.
Rhys is a regular speaker on matters relating to dispute
resolution, both at in-house and external conferences. Rhys is also
a regular contributor to industry and legal journals and has given
podcasts and television interviews on a variety of
litigation-related topics.
