Derek has a broad based corporate tax practice
covering transactional and structuring work and tax disputes.
Derek is the head of our Corporate
Tax practice.
Derek's non-contentious practice includes
corporate M&A and restructuring and innovative finance
structures. Derek has a particular interest and is highly
rated for his work in the media and intellectual property
sector.
In the media sector
he works with leading film, television and on-line businesses
including:
- Major and Mini-Major Hollywood Studios
(including Time Warner, Viacom and Lions Gate)
- Independent producers (including providing
advice in relation to The Woman in Black, The King's Speech and
Kick Ass)
- Major broadcasters (including the BBC, Sky
and YouView).
In the wider intellectual property sector, he
advises a variety of clients with valuable intellectual property,
including:
- Telecommunications companies (including
Motorola Mobility and Sky);
- Franchisors (including Ping Pong and
LighterLife);
Derek also has a successful track record in
resolving high value tax disputes for household name clients,
particularly in the media and intellectual property sector.

current trends in tax planning techniques, the attitude of the UK
courts and HMRC’s likely attitude to new and innovative transaction
