Stefan Nerinckx is a Partner in our Employment & Benefits department.

Stefan co-heads the Employment and Benefits Group in Brussels together with Olivier Rijckaert. As a respected expert on employment, social security and business migration matters, Stefan covers the full range of individual and collective labour and employment Law matters, including employment contracts, employment terminations, international mobility (including international employment, social security and business migration law), executive transfers, flexibility in work organisation (working time, end-of-career planning, employee/self-employed work status, lending of staff, etc.), non-compete and restrictive covenants, confidentiality issues, privacy and use of social media in work relations, employment issues in the context of mergers & acquisitions, collective lay-offs and closures of undertakings, industrial disputes and industrial action involving trade unions (including social elections), executive compensation and employment litigation.

He holds a master’s degree in Law from the University of Brussels (Belgium) and three separate second master’s in (i) labour law (University of Brussels), (ii) human resources management (University College of Brussels) and (iii) comparative industrial relations (Sinea/University of Bologna, Italy).

Outside his legal practice, Stefan is a professor employment/labour law at the University College of Brussels and a regular guest lecturer on labour law issues at the Vlerick School of Management in Ghent/Leuven. Stefan is recognised by Chambers Europe (listed since 2007) and the Legal 500 (EMEA - listed since 2005). The Legal 500 speaks of him as a leading individual for Labour & Employment law in Belgium, stating he is singled out as an ‘excellent lawyer’ who is ‘reliable, understanding of business needs and possesses a broad and in-depth knowledge on employment law’ and is ‘very responsive, friendly, down-to-earth and to-the-point, takes a pragmatic approach and solves problems quickly’. Chambers 2011 reports that sources are enthusiastic in their praise for Stefan. He is a well-known employment, social security and immigration practitioner, who is often seen handling international work. “He aims to avoid conflict and looks for a win-win solution for both parties,” say clients. “He responds immediately by phone or e-mail, works rapidly and understands what clients in international contexts need. He is also quick-thinking, entrepreneurial and has good analytical skills.” Stefan is also referenced in the “Who’s Who of Business Lawyers” (‘Labour Law‘ and ‘business migration’ sections) and the “Best Lawyers” (American Bar Association/ Harvard) list for Belgium.

As a foremost practitioner in his field, Stefan is also a prolific writer (e.g. co-editor of a legal journal), a public speaker and is regularly consulted by the Belgian government, the Belgian Employers’ federation (VBO/FEB) and the Belgian ‘National Labour Council’ for his insights and views on employment law matters. He is also an active member of the HR Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and a national reporter on labour law issues for AIJA (Association Internationale de Jeunes Avocats/International Association of Young Lawyers). He is also a member of the European Employment Law Association (EELA) and the Belgian ‘Vereniging voor Sociaal Recht’.
