James specialises in IP and IT
dispute resolution, particularly where those
disciplines intersect in the technology, media and
telecoms sector. He worked as in-house IP
counsel to a multinational telecommunications services company
before joining Field Fisher Waterhouse in 2007. James has a
particular interest in new (and tech-driven) media, including the
technology that is growing up around the consumption of
music.
James's practice centres on resolving soft IP disputes (i.e. those
relating to trade
marks, copyright, database
rights, design
rights and confidential
information) and IT issues (including helping
clients to salvage - or to extract themselves as efficiently as
possible from - failing software development projects). Other key
areas of expertise include franchising disputes, and contentious
data protection and privacy work.
While James has litigation experience in the County Courts, High
Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, he is also a keen
advocate of alternative dispute resolution. In particular,
James has an excellent track record of resolving complex disputes
in mediation.
James lectures in the University of Cambridge Institute of
Biotechnology, teaching the intellectual property element of the
Masters in Bioscience Enterprise degree. His professional
memberships include the American Intellectual Property Law
Association, the International Trademark Association, and the
Society for Computers and Law.
James was a founding committee member of IPSoc (the society for
junior IP practitioners) and has been Chairman since 2011. See
