European Commission review the Package Travel Directive
20 November 2007
The European Commission is reviewing what it calls the
"main regulatory problems posed by the regulation of package
travel".
In fact, the real issue is that since the
Package Travel Directive in 1990 (and the Directive has been
implemented into every Member State), the travel industry has
developed to such an extent that, in many respects, the Package
Travel Directive is outdated.
The review includes the
following:
- The definition of package - does it need to be
changed/broadened?
- In relation to information to be given to consumers,
whether there should be separate regulations about the
classification of hotels?
Hoteliers need to be alert to the
Commission's review. Significant changes in the definition of
package could impact in two ways - hotel's activities may become
packages, and the demands of travel companies which find that their
selling practices became "packages". This is in addition to
the consequences of any regulation of European hotel
classification.
